I wish you were here to experience the unity and the amazing sights and sounds of a family working in unity; different parts of the body of Christ.

Today was an excellent day full of things to be grateful for; delayed luggage arriving, the amazing friendliness and warmth of complete strangers at the Global day of prayer event offering the privilege of peering into their lives through all the stories candidly shared and affording you the opportunity to do the same… Getting to know people in a genuine way with none of the usual masks up simply because everyone was united in the focus for the event.

Seeing real life live before your eyes and having lives transformed is an amazing experience that everyone should and can have access to and for some reason it seems easier to be that vulnerable when away from life's usual stressors or familiar context.

I was reminded today that all required of us is as simple as living life in genuine community and preferring one another over ourselves. It is in this that we discover our passions, have proper expectations set, have our gifts develop and grow into the people we are called to be.

It is possible to live this life anywhere and I am sure you all experience similar junctures occasionally, and while I do wish you were here with me today, I pray that God will provide you your own special experience of unity in His body as one way to show you His love.

Global Day of Prayer South Africa - Full Circle

My dear Fr-amily :),

I look back on just a few years ago when God answered some of my specific prayers by connecting me to an business as missions organization called rep.

My first trip was to Cape Town South Africa in November 2006, and the transitions and transformations in my life between then and now boggle my mind. I know some of you are still amazed as well :)



Fast forward to a couple of years later, and I now have the opportunity to go back to Cape Town and participate in the Global Day of prayer 2010 (GDOP 2010)... and event stemming from one man's obedience to God's request, and now impacts the entire world.

Our team will be assisting with the Business Track during the Global Day of Prayer
Conference leading up to 10-year Global Day of Prayer celebration on May 23rd. We will have the privilege of working with business people from all over Africa, and the rest of the world. We will also be blessing, consulting, and meeting with past rēp clients(kingdom businesses) in Cape Town over the past several years.



GDOP 2010 is taking place in the weeks just before the World cup so I am particularly expectant about the potential spiritual impact as well.

In case I haven't talked your ears off just yet about this, rep is an organization based in the SF Bay Area, but made up of 500+ spirit-filled believers throughout the world(US, South Africa, India, Indonesia)and growing.

I am excited to go back to one of the places where God started me on an incredible journey and also to participate in a tangible result of obedience... this is truly encouraging!

I could not have participated so intimately with rep in the past couple of years without your support and am looking forward to having you participate again.

This trip comes at a time when I have a lot of activities and responsibilities to juggle, so I am seriously in meed of prayer for wisdom and for everything to fall into place.
I am asking for your prayers from now on as we prepare to go, as well as while on ground. Specifically, I need prayer about:

- spiritual readiness

Its not about what you think it is!

I just remembered that I needed to update this to close out on the Indonesian visit saga :)

So I ended up not making it to Indonesia last year which was a HUGE disappointment, but ended up being an amazing blessing and it was not even in disguise :)

The same week I was supposed to be gone, a couple of issues that had been simmering at work for almost 2 years came to a head after consistently asking for God's intervention for that long! It turned out that it was a good thing I was around and able to witness it first hand and watch God move in an amazing way and answer prayers in yet another way He never had before then in my life.
It occured to me that was a main reason I probably didnt get to travel that week.

In addition, I also got to rest and reconnect with good friends which did a whole lot to refresh me spiritually.

Sometimes, things are just not about what we think they are... I was so focused on Indonesia and getting there, but God had different plans that definitely worked out for my good.

Yay God!

Still Standing

... ever get a sense sometimes that though a battle is won, the war was lost? Well, not this time enemy!
Its a day to departure and I am still expecting my visa. This reminds me of the time Daniel prayed and though God answered, his response was delayed in getting to Daniel.
I'm taking a leaf from his book and persisting until the results come.

Today, the theme is praise :) Praise until my hope is realized.

This is so much fun watching God come through. Never a dull moment !

And so the warfare begins

As usual with any Big Guy trips coming up, there are always obstacles to be overcome that will either test a person's character or perseverance in the face of adversity. I don't quite know which this is, but I've been told that the visa process is now different from last year's and that this year, I either need to

- apply for the Indonesian embassy to issue a letter to the Nigerian embassy, to be faxed to me, to then send over with my passport to the Nigerian embassy to issue a response letter to be mailed back to the Indonesian embassy in Jakarta and then get a letter issued for me to take to the Indonesian embassy locally to get a visa issued.... huh?

Or

- fax over every page of my current passport in the hopes that will suffice for a letter to be provided for the local Indonesian embassy to issue a visa.

I think you can figure out which route I chose!

Right now I just need favor to get this sorted out so I can get a ticket at a decent price and get another chance to do some damage to the bad one's behind ;)

Re-tracing my steps

I can’t believe it’s that time of year again already!

I’m heading out to Indonesia on November 7th to work with businesses to help refocus them on transforming their immediate society through their businesses and bring a little bit of God’s kingdom to earth.

I know it sounds funny to think of businesses doing that, but I’ve been part of that for the past 3 years now and it’s been a huge spiritual learning curve for me not to mention a lot of fun to see God work in ways I would never have expected.

I’m hooked :0), so I’m going back again and since this will be my second time in Indonesia (I am finally retracing my steps), I’ll be working with new clients as well as revisiting past clients to encourage them and am likely to get encouraged myself by the stories of exploits God has taken them through!

Sigh; its over too quickly.

I confess; I'm officially a "business missions" trip junkie and places like Indonesia only make it all the more difficult to break the habit. I am not complaining though, I'd rather have this addiction than another anyday.

My trip to Indonesia might be over, but the people are definitely still in my heart. Its hard to explain how a country that is reputed to be so corrupt has some of the coolest and nicest people I have ever met. I know, I know, it only takes one bad apple to spoil the whole bunch, but man oh man, what hospitality!

It was awesome to experience God at work as always; that'll never get old for me. I sat there at the client presentation after two weeks of working with business owners we just met and listened to some of the vision and plans for their businesses with utter amazement.
Oh and by this time, they were not only no longer strangers but good friends some of whom I am sure I'll have for a lifetime!

My prayer now is that as each organization begins the hard work of implementing the changes they talked about, they will be encouraged and rewarded with small victories that count towards eternity.

Today In Jakarta I learned that

- Every Sunday,certain streets and road lanes are shut down until noon so that people can work out in the streets because there is such limited space. In fact, one Sunday every month, certain parts of the city go "carless" until 2pm so people can engage in recreational activities and as part of a means to reduce pollution

- Indonesians clap on the downbeat! At church today I was wondering why my claps seemed faster than anyone else's though THEY all seemed to be clapping at the same time. I was very relieved when my Indonesian friend confirmed that everyone was definitley clapping to a different rhythm!

- The easiest way to indicate a plural in the Indonesian language is to repeat the word. So to give an example in English, products would be said product-product. Its really cute :)

- Indonesians love to feed their guests! we visited 5 different places for lunch just so we could sample foods from different parts of the Java Islands. There are so many different foods and methods of preparation that it could take a month just to sample them all!

- It is possible for an entire group of people to be addicted to one simple fruit... MANGOSTEEN! The team just can't get enough and there definitely be withdrawal symptoms I tell you.

I (HEART) JAKARTA!!

And the love affair begins :) I LOVE this place! Its like my Lagos, only a bit cleaner, with less traffic and definitely much cheaper. The people are very friendly and just so sweet, and the spiritual climate is just so open. For a professed moslem nation, there seems to be a high degree of tolerance and peaceful coexistence ( for the most part :))

The team out here is great and it is exciting to get to know some of my co-consultants better. The food is awesome! and there is just so much of it... I've had to miss breakfast twice already just because I was still full from dinner, and I have only been here 3 days!

After much deliberation and skilful re-arranging :) I finally got my client on Tuesday. Surprise, surprise, he owns a bakery!! Whohoo, talk about God ordained matching ( if you dont know what this is about, remind me to bake you a cake sometime). He told me "Oh I do more on the business side", but then sits around doing product development in his head and coming up with new flavors and products to sell... hmm.

He also has such a big heart for ending poverty, though he'd call it "improving quality of life" and I'm looking forward to working with him on fleshing out some strategy and ideas!

... And I guess I really am going!

Wow! This has been one hard trip to get ready for let me tell you. I have been so spoiled by having enough funds, getting visas without issues and leaving exactly when I wanted to on all my other trips that this one came as a surprise.

Just to provide more context, I bought my ticket yesterday and am leaving tomorrow! Talk about cutting it close!

The visa process alone was a trip in itself and all along I've found myself questioning my conviction that this was a trip I was supposed to go on. With each obstacle it was a question back to God as to what the plan was and what I was supposed to do with the obstacle; a sign to quit? Or continue pressing on?

Bottom line is that I pick up my visa in one day though it usualy takes 3 business days, I get a reasonable ticket price though I got one VERY close to departure date, getting on a plane at midnight though funds are not complete yet and sit amazed at the faith I have had to have for what I would consider "small things" and yet how faithful God has been through it all.

I am excited to see what Indonesia holds and the awesome testimonies I know I will experience and look forward to sharing them with you soon :)

There is a time for everything

... And this is a time to encourage.

Over the past two years I have been on an amazing journey that I sometimes still have to pinch myself to believe. I have been priviledged to be part of work that I deeply believe God has for this time and have found that there is nothing I can compare to the feeling of having partnered with God and seeing Him move in so many miraculous ways that I would have to write a book to document.

I have worked with several businesses and have had the honor to walk alongside them as they grapple with God's purpose for their businesses and how they can use those businesses to further His Kingdom. For some, it has not been about the business at all, but about the state of their hearts in relationship with Him. For others, it's been marriages that needed some some encouragement in the right direction, and for some it has been truly submitting their businesses over to Him.

In all cases, it has required tremendous faith and trust in God that He knows what He is about and has nothing but good plans for their lives even in the face of extreme or impossible circumstances.

Walking out a plan is not easy, and as with all human beings, we all need encouragement sometimes. This is such a time for some of these past clients and I plan to visit some of the clients in Indonesia to offer such support this fall.

This is also an opportunity to celebrate all that God has done since the first rep venture in Indonesia just a few short years ago.

I am in the process of fundraising for this 10 day venture and need some encouragement myself as funds are a bit low right now. And I have to trust God for this small step myself as my fundraising is not even comparable to the life-changing decisions some of these clients have taken that have ramifications for their families and in some cases, a whole society.

How time flies

Its been 4 months since my last venture.


In that time I have been trying to get settled into my new job back in Corporate America and figure out what the next steps for me are.

I've been getting so caught up in the daily grind that I've begun to neglect some of the things near and dear to my heart again, but this time, my heart's not allowing that to happen.


What do you do when you have so many dreams and none let go of you? What happens if they all clamor for attention at the same time because you've neglected them so long?

What do you do when the daily still doesnt match up but the dream is so much more real?

What if in all this, God challenges all that you thought you knew about Him, confirmed that He is truly in all that you know, but that He is so much more and intent on expanding your understanding of Him in ways that are seriously uncomfortable at times?


I thought my season of free-falling in Christ had at least been suspended, but am fast learning that unless I react fast and soon, I might very well lose these dreams or at worst, find myself still dreaming a couple of years from now.


Ecclesiastes 3:
1 There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven:

I just never throught the time to dream and to work would be simultaneous and so hard to do.

I can't believe its already the end of 2007, the year feels like it's flown!

Cute Babies and Praying dogs

On Monday night, each travelling consultant was to spend sometime with their local counterparts and their families. My co-consultant, Francis, took me to meet his family. I met his 2 sons and daughter and was treated to a lovely home cooked meal; daal, fried fish, curry chicken,rossum ( white rice with pepper water) and all kinds of goodies. During the meal, we were waited on hand and foot by his wife, who according to tradition demonstrates hospitality by doing this and waiting until the guest is done eating before she eats. I was struck by how much effort she had gone to just to make me feel welcome and made a mental note to self to double check that I also make sure that people feel welcomed in my presence.

The highlight of the evening came when after dinner, their huge black lab, Rambo, was allowed to join everyone and came in wagging his extremely strong tail very vigorously; I know because I got a few good whacks from his tail! Anyway, it was time to leave and we decided to say a blessing over each other and to my surprise Rambo quieted down, went behind the sofa and stood stock still. Apparently he understands the importance of the family blessing time and does that every single time they pray! Almost like clockwork, once prayer was over, he came out to socialize again. It was the funniest thing to watch.

My client also runs a home for abandoned babies and I met the three kids they currently have in their care. Looking at them I wondered how anyone could close themselves off from such vibrant lives! Apparently in some villages here, there are still a lot of beliefs practiced that either attach negativity to a girl child, or prevalent ignorance that allows a village witch doctor to convince a child’s family that he will bring bad luck to the family and therefore should be killed at birth! Thank God for people who can rescue these kids and give them a life! Looking at their little faces, I can’t help rooting for them and praying that they have a long and fulfilling life.

First week in India

As we start the second week of the venture I am amazed at how time has flown! It feels like the consultants have all barely had a chance to catch their breath and its time to dig back in.
The week was great! It was exciting getting to know our clients and their businesses meet their families and see how the Indians intertwine work and family. In quite a few cases, the businesses are family owned and run by the husband and wife. Some of them have amazing testimonies of what they’ve experienced in their businesses and could probably write best selling biographies of their businesses.

My client on this trip is Sitara music. Sitara music is holds sole publishing rights for EMI music in India. It is one of the family owned businesses mentioned earlier and has done quite well since it was started 12 years ago. The business model is an embodiment of the principles taught by rēp, the organization I am here in India with. There is a strong focus on empowering people to get out of poverty and one way they do this is by employing people who could otherwise not change their lot in life; 8 of their 15 employees are from various slums in India and just love what they do.

The other consultants have equally amazing clients and a common theme on this trip is actually how well integrated most of the businesses already were with their life focus. I think this venture will end up being an adrenaline shot for most of them to excel in what they were already doing great at. I can’t wait to hear and share some of the great stories I know will come out of this time.

India has met and exceeded my expectations in so many ways. It is just as I dreamt up in terms of hustle and bustle, the people and their genuine warmth, and the cacophony of everyday life here; auto-rickshaws, bicycles and motorcycles all vying for their place on the road alongside regular cars, overstuffed buses and an unbelievable mass of pedestrians, the incessant honking which is not a sign of aggression but more of an acknowledgement of the other users of the road, the noise and smells from the street vendors peddling a wider variety of sweets, foods and snacks than I have even seen in my life!, and the variety in people and languages that all somehow are related. What a thrill ride!

Enroute to Chennai

As I wander around the ghostly edifice that is the Changi airport at 12am local time, I am attentive to things that are not commonplace for me.
I learnt a new word today... "travellator" It caught me by surprise for a second till i realized it referred to the moving walkway!

Airport workers are putting up Christmas decorations, people milling from one terminal to the other, strangers having conversations; I am fascinated by humanity and how we can all appear so different yet are the same even if we use different words for the same thing.
Call me mushy in my old age, but I just don't see why there is so much strife in the world. I do believe that with just a little bit of an explanation/dialogue, people can get to understand each other and avoid all that mess . <>

This is my first time in Asia so I am doubly excited that I get to experience something new in addition to working with Rep on the India venture that starts on Monday. I can't wait to see if my imagination did an adequate job of creating Chennai in my head, meet all the co-consultants from the other parts of the world that I have not met yet, and see who my client is this time.

I eagerly anticipate all that I know God will do in their business and lives and being able to partner in that and I look forward to a day when you will be able to be on a venture physically with me!!

With less than 4 weeks to go

I have seriously been thinking about my motivation for the things I do and my growing interest and passion for societal transformation; seeing an end to injustice, poverty and exploitation of humankind.

Yes I am a Christian and do take to heart the mandate to be my "brother's keeper" but for me it goes beyond even that. I am not an advocate of communal poverty because I believe that one has to have something in order to be able to give it. At the same time, I don't think that one can only give from an excess because that introduces too much relativity in this individualistic world we live in.

For me it boils down to compassion; how can I be content when I have a standard of living that at least 60% of the world only dreams about yet there is no reason for things to be that way?

People have been conditioned to think that they can only succeed or get ahead if somebody else doesn't. Western thought around performance and measurement would seem to support this notion with performance bell curves and the limitations as well as grading systems in schools and colleges but this is simply not true.

I strongly believe that "there is enough pie for everyone" and judging from conversations with various people lately, a lot more people are coming alive to that concept as well. We live in an age of such innovation and speedy progress that while natural resources are still limited, mankind is increasingly coming up with different ways of not only harnessing those resources, but also making better use of what we already have with an increasing awareness of our responsibility to one another and the earth we live in.

I know I am but one piece in the puzzle and that there are a lot of other people doing their part to address these issues. My group of the day is ONE.org who are supporting an initiative for debt cancellation in some of the most impoverished nations in the world by doing their piece in the US and asking congress for an intervention. People who are poor are NOT stupid but find themselves in a situation that is sometimes beyond their control, yet they make the best of it and carry on daily with much less than it costs most of us to eat a meal!

I know my efforts are small compared to the problem aat hand, but am encouraged to know that there are so many people and organizations tackling societal transformation in their own way ( clinton foundation, save a tree, local NGOs, save darfur )

I had planned to go on all the fall ventures with rēp this year, but that will not be the case.
I recently started a new job back in the software industry though in a completely different role than before and therefore have more limited flexible time.

All is not lost though, I will be off to India in November and will still need assistance with getting there and going through the venture ( Nov 12th - 23rd)

I have had a wonderful 6 months experiencing being free-falling in Christ;
- trying to hone my life vision,
- figuring out what to do to make it happen
- and what my next steps are... ( still need more work :))

I actually experienced a lot of the clichéd saying I used to mouth off such as "a friend in need is a friend indeed", learnt a lot about myself and the people around me. I hope I am a better person for the time of reflection and am committed to taking that with me as a part of who I am now so I can continue to grow.

In the short term, I am excited that I get to go to India this fall on another venture and can't wait to meet all the local consultants and the new clients and see what God is going to do with them in the condensed time.
At the same time I get to experience a new job, meet new people locally and see what God is going to do there too; a double whammy :)

Finding life, Following Passion

My heart has been stolen by the beauty of the work that I have seen God do on the previous ventures I have been on and the only way I forsee retrieving it is to go back again to make sure that none of its pieces are left behind there :)

On a more serious note, I am truly experiencing deep internal conflict as I contemplate a fall season without a rēp venture in it.

Being currently "officially" unemployed and having tried to find challenging work to no avail so far makes this season one in which I particularly have to lean on faith as an anchor. My decision to explore ventures as an option this fall was a particularly difficult one. Part of my reasoning was that I must be on this hiatus right now for a particular reason and if that is the case, I want to take full advantage of the time I have right now.

This fall, I will be part of rēp teams from the U.S.A. that will go to Cape Town/Gauteng, South Africa, Israel, Jakarta/Indonesia, Chennai/India for about 2 weeks each to partner with local business professionals in a transformational venture. Working with believers in Cape Town/Gauteng, South Africa, Israel, Jakarta/ Indonesia, Chennai/India, we will help re-purpose companies to align them with God’s agenda of transforming the societies.

This has truly become a driving force for me because It is something I am extremely passionate about. I have already invested 100+ hours into my own training and am now assisting in training other consultants and in recruiting people with a similar heart focus to participate in ventures where they are sorely needed. I have and am continuing to develop a deeper understanding of subjects such as business as a calling, the reasons why business is ministry, the interplay between vocational training and ministry gifts, the eternal principles for every aspect of business, cross-cultural missions, and trends in church planting.

My responsibilities in Cape Town/Gauteng, South Africa, Israel, Jakarta/Indonesia, Chennai/India will include:

· Sourcing for and establishing relationships with potential clients and consultants in Israel
· Filling Ops manager role in Indonesia and ensuring that clients and consultants experience a smooth venture
· Daily consultations with a South African/Indonesian/Indian company on how to be re-purposed
· Developing a Kingdom scorecard for my client that includes what is good for their business today while also producing eternal results
· Facilitating collaboration among different churches and ministries and businesses
. Participation at times in various prayer & evangelism events.

Restitution and Forgiveness in South Africa

On my last trip in Cape Town, I had the priviledge of meeting with Charles Robertson, a local author and white South African, who is one of the people at the forefront of the restitution movement and had written a book basically giving guidelines on what can be done to ensure that restitution happens and is effective.

The complicated nature of race relations struck me again from our discussions then and from being in Johannesburg on this trip. Every other black South African I met tried to speak to me in their native tongue though I dont look like a South African and given that there are several black South African languages... but I digress.

First off, being a black African whose family has never been indoctrinated into slavery gives me and those like me a very different perspective. I know who I am and where I am from, to at least the fourth generation before me, and am very grounded in that understanding and who I represent.
However, because of the nature of race relations and world history of general subjugation of black African races, when "the world" in general sees me, I am seen first as a black woman and thus stereotyped without any basis in who I really am. The surprise then comes when I not only speak intelligently about whatever the topic of the day is but also express my very valid opinions and perspectives. Even then, acceptance is not always guaranteed and an education process often has to take place.

It is not enough for people who have been oppressed to be set free and be remunerated physically for offenses committed against them; they also need to be taught what it means, looks like, tastes like and feels like to be free and it is partly the responsibility of those who have committed the oppression and are making amends to impart the undertsanding along with the physical remuneration.

Furthermore, in the case of South Africa, almost all the races that exist on the land today have oppressed another race at some point in time; the English oppressed Afrikaaners, Afrikaaners the blacks, the blacks the bushmen who originally owned the land and are by and large still forgotten today.
In My Humble Opinion, until all the races in South Africa come together and truly repent and forgive for the crimes committed against each other, the land will not be truly healed and will continue to bear the weight and express it in the heaviness that is still spiritually prevalent today. One can almost still hear the voices of all that have passed in the air while walking down the streets.
Forgiveness is where true repentance and freedom lies; freedom for those that have oppressed and been oppressed. Anything else is just keeping the lid on things until the "stuff" bag is so full it explodes again.

May South Africa truly be free from the ramifications of its past; not to forget, but to promote awareness so that the same crimes are not repeated again.
